Strangely, All I Can Focus on is the Polaroid “When I first started on Flickr, Polaroid was plentiful. I would shoot 7, 8, 10 packs during a shoot, never imagining they’d one day stop making the stuff. The glorious fantastic stuff. Now I find it at Mexican markets, am gifted boxes from kind fans, and purchase Impossible Project film, which is becoming increasingly good, but is not yet Polaroid. Format. Here’s something for ya: digital, film, they don’t matter. Polaroid matters. You take a picture with film, you take a picture with digital, the experience is the same. You take the picture. But with Polaroid, first, they would marvel at the camera, an odd thing whichever one you had. Then you’d take the picture AND OUT IT CAME, FROM THE CAMERA ITSELF, A MODERN MARVEL. We’d stop, watch it together, watch it develop, watch the photograph slowly resolve into existence. And if it was bad, we’d take another. But if it was good. Oh, the feeling, the elation, it was something my subject and I had accomplished together, we’d MADE this thing. It’s a feeling I try to explain when I take a Polaroid, these days. I insist the subject watch the photo develop. “You never get to see this anymore! Your memory of this process is from YEARS AGO. Watch this, this is special.” Something special. That’s the feeling when I get it right, that’s the feeling when the Polaroid is good, when the shoot is good, when the experience is good. Something special was made.” Lou O’Bedlam.
